OMGI appoints head of responsible investment and stewardship

Old Mutual Global Investors (OMGI) has appointed Freddie Woolfe as head of responsible investment and stewardship. Freddie, who joined OMGI on Monday 13 November, will work with the firm’s fund management teams, reporting into head of UK equities Richard Buxton.

Freddie will play a key part in shaping and directing OMGI’s stewardship work, providing guidance on corporate governance and stewardship related issues to OMGI’s senior management team. Additionally, he will be responsible for overseeing a comprehensive global voting programme for OMGI. He will work with fund managers to ensure that investment decisions are made with the best interests of clients in mind and are aligned with OMGI’s stewardship code that encourages fund managers to consider the impact of environmental, social and governance issues on the potential return of an investment.

Freddie joins OMGI from Newton Investment Management where he was responsible investment analyst primarily covering the healthcare and technology, media and telecommunications sectors, a role he held from March 2015. In this role he also helped develop Newton’s house view on global corporate governance issues. Prior to this position, he worked at Hermes Equity Ownership Services as associate director, head of UK engagement from 2008. He started his career in 2006 in HSBC’s fraud, risk and security office and studied French and Italian at University College London.

Richard Buxton comments:

“With a focus on long-term, sustainable investments, it has long been important for the firms in which we invest to have transparent and robust corporate governance practices in place. Rightly, our clients also demand strong oversight of companies’ policies towards environmental and social issues, including diversity.  Freddie has extensive experience in driving responsible investment strategies and his appointment will help us to further develop our stewardship activities, building on the foundations laid by Paul Emerton in recent years.  This will enhance our investment processes, allowing us to deliver better investor outcomes and I really look forward to working with him.”

Freddie Woolfe adds:

“OMGI has a great reputation for outstanding investment performance, for stewardship and driving good corporate governance and I am delighted to be joining the business. Together with fund managers, and senior leaders, I look forward to developing the business’s responsible investment strategy and improving outcomes for investors.”
